There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling den betting is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; although, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are for all intents and purposes needed to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau casino, highlights 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel complex that contains many conveniences accompanying the gambling hall, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight gaming tables.
