The consistent shortage in the numbers of, Mozambique’s casinos is in 1 sense more or less puzzling, in one way or another.
In years gone by, the city was a region where a lot of South Africans would check out to detach themselves from the extremely restricting policies on betting (and, it has to be said, mixing with other races) that they had at home. As a result, you can count on a picture of a booming business to satisfy that tourist market.
On the other hand, maybe it is not particularly an amazement. The country is certainly the most pauperized over the world, having been through a distressing civil war (followed by crushing floods) from which it is still, very slowly, rebounding. This could make a region way less of a tourist destination, although there is presently a developing scene along a couple of the region’s stunning beaches.
It is also valid that regionally at a minimum, casinos in Mozambique have had to contend with casinos in the newly liberalized South Africa, including the prominent Sun City founded by the Kerzner family corporation.
Here is a list of Mozambique’s casinos:
Maputo: Polana Casino Hotel
There are 78 slot machines and also video poker games, five tables of American roulette, four blackjack tables, and a poker table.
Namaacha: Sol Libombos Hotel Casino
There are 40 slot machines, American roulette, and two tables for poker and punto banco.
It is thought that over time the total tourism sector in Mozambique will flourish dramatically. While the local languages are, apparently, African, there is additionally the fraction of Portuguese from the old colonial power and the current and escalating origin of English, both from South Africa and as part of the worldly phenomenon. The country is distinctly cheap (obviously, as it is extremely poor) and as above, has some of the most captivating beaches world wide, fronting onto the Indian Ocean. Those are the sorts of elements that make tourism authorities drool, and as the country escalates out of its existent slump, it’s likely that not only will tourism expand, but that the list of Mozambique’s casinos will grow longer too.
While the country is unlikely to ever restore its notoriety as a place for partying South Africans, as there are now other alternatives closer to home for them to relish in, the growth of a long distance tourism business is being set-up. This would be to serve Europeans seeking winter sun, as a retreat from the bleakness of the Northern Hemisphere winter. Plus, also, the finest prawns (shrimp) worldwide come from just offshore, in the Mozambique Channel.
